The dance was a blast, the pulsating-colourful lights, the speaker-thumping music, everyone was having a wicked time. I was dancing with Sasha, my best friend in the whole world, laughing, shaking our booties and being silly.
"Berni, we should get some guys to dance with," Sasha loudly spoke over the booming music.
"No! Lets not, there aren't any good-looking guys here anyway," I rejected her idea as I scanned the dancing people around us.
My name is Bernadette, Berni for short. Yes, my name sounds old-lady-like and get teased about it but I adore my name, it was my great-grandmothers name. I guess I'm not the most attractive girl in our school, unlike Sasha, she has golden-blonde hair that looks like it was made by angels from Heaven, accompanied by her ocean-blue eyes as if there was a miniature ocean in her iris, but me, I'm the girl with plain brown hair and green eyes, nothing spectacular about that.
"Have you seen Laura at all yet?" I asked Sasha, leaning to her ear.
"No, but I saw her when the dance was just about to start, she was with Andy."
I shrugged and tried to look around the dancing people to the dark sides of the large room, where no lights were shining on. I didn't even realize it but I was slowing down and not dancing anymore with a weary look on my face, while Sasha was dancing still.
"You okay, Berni?" Sasha wondered, trying to read the look on my face.
"Yeah," I replied with no emotion in my voice, "I'll be right back."
I squeezed by the crazy dancers and needed to hunt down the fruit punch table.
I found it, well I think I did, it was covered in red, plastic party cups, just thrown on, some were even in the punch bowl.
"Yeah... I'm not going to drink that anymore," I assured myself and walked away. Then I stopped abruptly not too far from the table and slowly turned to my right, sitting there with her head down in the dark was Laura, with her magenta-flower dress.
"Laura! There you are! I have been looking for you, where have you been all this time?" I exclaimed with joy and walked over to her. She didn't respond, she sat there, frozen like an ice block.
"Laura, are you alright?" I asked concerned.
"No," She replied finally.
I paused, then asked, "Well, whats wrong?"
There was a long pause, then she finally spoke, "I can't find Andy, I'm worried, he said he would be right back and that he was going to get a pack of cigarettes, he hasn't come back, which was when the dance just started he told me that."
Laura's voice sounded weak, and that she was about to cry.
"I'm sure hes alright, he probably met someone on the way and they are having a chat." I reassured her.
"Yeah, maybe, but do you think we could go look for him?" She asked me, as she lifted her head to look at me.
"Sure, but I'm sure hes fine," I repeated.
Laura got up and we both headed to the exit. It was pouring rain outside and dark, only the neon signs of the shops would light the alleyway which we entered from the exit of the dance.
"Its pouring rain and dark outside, how are we going to see him?" I asked as I shielded my eyes from the rain.
"Wait here, I will go get our coats and try to find an umbrella," Laura told me as she went back into the dance.
I stood there, trying to stand underneath the tiny canopy in the alley that helped a little bit from the rain, but I still couldn't see a thing. Suddenly, I heard this crashing noise to the right of me, I peered out, squinting my eyes and trying to look through the rain. The only thing I could make out were some tin garbage cans and it looked like a black garbage bag was on the ground. Then, the thing I thought was a black garbage bag, stood up and limped towards me. There was a strong odour of alcohol all of a sudden, then the figure appeared in front of me. It was a man, who was drunk, very drunk and reeked of Whiskey or some sort of alcohol.
"Hey," He said in a slurry voice, "Wha' a pretty lady like yo' doin' out her'?"
"None of your business," I replied firmly.
"Yo' dun haff to be rude," He gargled as he pointed his wobbly index finger at me. "C'mon back to my hom' and haff som' fun."
He limped closer towards me and had his arms out, ready to grab me, I stepped back away from him and turned away. Thankfully, Laura came out in time and told him to buzz off, then he hobbled away.
"Who was he?" Laura wondered as she handed me my coat.
"Some drunk guy, he was about to grab me, fortunately you came out in time."
Laura looked at me to see if I was hurt or anything and then looked at the direction the man walked away.
"Ready?" I asked zipping up my coat.
"Yes, lets go."
We stepped out into the rain, it making drips on our coat hoods, it echoes when it hits. We walked down the alley way, trying to make out objects and things through the darkness. Apparently, we were out there for about 30 minutes and it gradually went to a spitting from it being pouring. Laura looked around, then continued down the alley. Suddenly, she stopped abruptly in front of me, blocking my view from anything. I saw her head was looking down to the ground, I followed her eyes and peeked around her shoulder. It was so dark out now, but we clearly could see what was lying there. The person we thought was getting cigarettes and stopping to talk with someone on the way was lying the cold and wet sidewalk. I couldn't understand why he was lying there, and focused on him more, then I saw the pool of red water, leaking from underneath him. Now, I understood why he was lying there. I didn't believe this was happening, this is a dream isn't it? I finally was able to look away and to Laura's face. Her face was statue-like, nothing moved, I couldn't even tell if she was breathing. Suddenly, Laura fell to her knees and held Andy's face. I knew she was crying, tears were rolling down my cheeks as well. What if hes not actually bleeding, or dying and we are crying for no reason? We don't know for sure.
"Call for help!" Laura screamed, as she choked on her tears.
Her demand didn't register in me at first so I stood there for a second, then I ran to a nearby store that was just about to close. I ran in there as fast as I could and asked the shop clerk if they could call 911 because there was somebody injured and bleeding in the alley-way. I could tell the shop clerk was startled by my face, bright-red and smeared with tears. I ran back outside to Laura and Andy, Laura was gently lying beside Andy now, caressing his face.
"Andy, don't worry, help is on its way," I managed to say.
Andy was pale as white-chalk not able to move, his mouth was filled with blood, making it unable for him to speak. Faint sirens rang in the distance and became louder. Laura stood up and covered her face as the police arrived first. The flashing, bright lights of the police car lit up the alley and you could see everyone's face clearly. The police officer stepped out of his car, "What happened here?" He asked as he walked closer to us.
I saw that Laura wouldn't be able to speak so I spoke for her, "Our friend, Andy, is bleeding, and looks like-," I felt the tears build up in me and stopped for a second so I didn't choke and continued, "And looks like hes dying."
"I need you two to step aside please," The police officer motioned us and walked to Andy.
He examined Andy and took out a notebook and pen.
"A Royal, huh? This isn't a pretty sight," He pointed out as he jotted down something in his notebook.
"I'm sorry, but hes not going to make it," The police officer softly said to us as he turned around and faced us.
Laura instantly bursted into crying hysterically and screamed, "No! No! No! He can't be dead, our love was going to keep us living forever with each other!"
I hugged Laura and her body was shaking from crying so hard and much.
"I'm sorry," The police officer repeated.
After that, it felt like everything went in slow-motion, the sirens of the ambulances rang slowly, the movement of the paramedics rushing and getting their equipment. Laura and I stood there in each others arms in the mayhem of police cars and ambulances. If only there could be a rewind button, if only he didn't go out, if only he wasn't dead. This had to be a dream.
This was a English Project, we had to write an alternate ending to the story, "On the Sidewalk Bleeding" by Evan Hunter.
